Karla Explains Her Cancer

The first few days in the hospital were a STEEP learning curve. The biggest thing that I learned was that I really knew nothing about cancer. But, I am quickly becoming an expert in my cancer.

I must admit that you are one of the bravest people I know. Perhaps it was your bravery in starting up new greenfield companies that allowed you to face this awful disease. To think that you could do that video without crying and telling others “why me” is amazing in itself. Adrian was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly 6 years ago. He was “lucky” to have found a lump so there was no time delay. He too is so young – same age as you – what the heck is going on?? He is well now and you can be too. Thanks for sharing your story – it will help us to push doctors to investigate our symptoms and get answers so we can deal with the medical problems. Will keep following you and wish for improved health. Penny & Adrian

Hey Karla… I just watched the message that you taped with Joseph, your awesome nurse..… Really helpful for me to understand how this all came about. But what is still so confounding is how incredibly positive and strong willed you are in the face of such bewildering and frustrating news. You are such a remarkable person…and at a time when we should all be helping YOU …there you go helping the rest of US …in the search for our own strength! You might not have even known that that notion was embedded in your message. But it was. It’s so funny that here we are…women at (and around) the age of 50…and I can still see your 12-year-old face and hear your 15-year-old voice and spot your 17-year-old personality! I think that’s what’s so special about being longtime family friends… We see the people that we have always known …while simultaneously appreciating the people that we’ve become.

It’s Thanksgiving week here in the US. And my mom is flying up from Florida to have Thanksgiving dinner this Thursday with Chris and me. Fischer and Ridley are flying down to the Turks and Caicos to spend the holiday with their dad and his family…as they have a place down there… We are inviting stragglers and friends from NYC and CT to join us and we will have a table of nine (One of whom is the legendary actress Brenda Vacaro!) I will lift my glass to you and give thanks for the joys I have always shared with you from the time we were little…to the strength and conviction you are now sending to me through the discovery of your new normal.
Loving you from slightly afar…but feeling closer to you than ever before.
My warmest hugs, Ashleigh❤️

I try to stay positive as much as possible but there are (obviously) some things about this that are just terrible and difficult to deal with. The reason that I was in the hospital for so long was because we were dealing with pain management and trying to get my pain under control.

Going Home

After spending nearly a month in the hospital, I was able to start November by going home. This was not an easy transition to make. While of course I wanted to get home to my family and dogs, the hospital was a very comforting and healing place for me. I felt a lot of love and support from the staff and knew that they were doing their best to take care of me.

Truthfully, there have been lots of dark moments in the past month. This has not been easy on anyone. But, I have never been one who can just dwell on the negative.
