This design recognizes the importance of ensuring that children in foster care are given the support and care that they need to flourish. There are multitudes of reasons why a child or young person may enter the care system, but it is usually because their birth family no longer being able to provide a safe and stable home for them. This t-shirt highlights the importance of challenging the stigma and stereotypes pertaining to foster care status by declaring allyship.
Around the world, there is a significant shortage of foster parents available. For example, in America, on any given day, there are around 437,000 children in the care system and in need of a foster family. Whereas in England and Wales an extra 9000 foster families are required to meet the demand. (Adoption.org)
As they get older, looked after children and young people are less likely to find their forever homes, with 30,000 young adults aging out of the foster care system each year. This is associated with an increased risk of experiencing negative outcomes in adulthood. For example, studies have indicated that adults who are care leavers are more likely to misuse substances, are less likely to be employed, and are disproportionately represented amongst the homeless and prison population.
