Makeup can be a powerful tool. It can be something to make us feel strong and beautiful or something used to cover our true selves. This design by Jordan Bouma is an evocative piece of art that highlights the implications of constantly applying layers of makeup to avoid having to reveal our true face to the world.
As we are exposed to media imagery, we are consistently pressured to conform to Western societal standards of beauty, and cosmetics are sold to us as a way of creating and sustaining these media-driven standards. We are constantly being told that we are not good enough the way that we are and that there is one “perfect” way to be and the more we subscribe to that standard, the more we are injuring our spirit, mental health and opinions of ourselves and others.
