There are many ways that people justify the sale of sex but the reality is that it is rarely a life that someone would choose if they believed they had other options. Turning a person’s body into a commodity takes a part of them that is not easily returned.
There are millions of people throughout the world who work in the trafficking trade. And while some countries have made efforts to make sex work safer and reduce the crime associate with it, evidence does not show that legalizing it makes much of a difference. It is estimated at approximately 40-42 million people worldwide sell sex for money, 75% of which are between the ages of thirteen and twenty-five. Many of these have been trafficked into forced labor, a modern-day form of slavery that supports the $99 billion per year global sex trafficking industry. (NCJRS)
It remains that prostitution is a gendered survival strategy and working as a sex worker is associated with a significantly increased risk of sexual harassment, rape, and violence. One study of women in Vancouver reported that 75% of participants had experienced physical injuries and 50% suffered head injuries from violent assaults. (UChicago)
