We live in a world that would be happy to do all your thinking for you: “Buy this, hate that, watch this, love that.” And while we all understand that happiness comes from finding our own path and making our own choices, sometimes we need a little reminder to ignore all of the extra noise shouting in our ears.. When you’re feeling uncertain,. take the time to understand the underlying facts of a given situation, and form your own well-informed opinions around those facts. Think for yourself.

Everyone has biases. A 2016 study found that teachers expect white students to achieve more than black ones. In the student of 8000 students, white teachers believed that black students had a 1 in 3 chance of graduating from college, while black teachers of the same students believed that 1 in 2 would graduate. Another study of over 1200 recommendation letters from 54 countries found male students get higher praise on average, setting them apart from their female peers. While they would describe a male scientist as “brilliant”, a female with similar experience would be described as “very knowledgeable”. (Science News For Students)
One of the main reasons people avoid changing their opinions is because they don’t want to admit that they were previously wrong. A way of avoiding this is by practicing giving yourself and others an “out”. An old belief or opinion might have made sense and been the “right” choice for you previously. That doesn’t mean you can’t evolve in the future. (Inc.)
