Canada, like many modern nations, needs to come to terms with the way its government had treated native populations for many many years. In Canada, these people are referred to as indigenous peoples, and they’ve been discriminated against for much of Canadian history. This piece from Brigid Moore encourages people to learn about the oppressive history against Indigenous lives, and fight for a better tomorrow for everyone.
Systemic racism has left indigenous children with significant disadvantages in Canada. In 2016, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruled that the child and family services for indigenous children had been systematically underfunded, and that must end. This is a good start, but only the first step of many to heal these wounds. (Amnesty.CA)
In 2011, 28% of on-reserve indigenous people and 30% of Inuit in Canada lived in crowded homes, that is, with more than one person per room. This is only one of many economic inequalities that have come about from years of discrimination that must be corrected. (Fact Sheet for Canada)
Question: In what ways do you think the world would be different if European nations had tried to coincide with indigenous populations, rather than oppose them?
