Anything You Can Do Tee

Around half of the global population experiences periods and they play an essential role in our evolution. Yet, for many, conversations around menstruation remain uncomfortable, taboo, or even “gross”. Tampons and other sanitary products are still not even considered essential in many major countries, allowing them to be taxed and making them less accessible to everyone. Whereas, in comparison, men’s razors are tax-free.

This design promotes period positivity and aims to normalize the conversation surrounding periods. While some might not wish to discuss it, this is not a practice that most women can escape or avoid. We grow up learning how to experience all aspects of life - good, bad and difficult - while bleeding, cramping and dealing with shifting hormones and should feel comfortable discussing that part of ourselves.

  1. Despite over 80% of women getting painful cramps, it is estimated that around 14% of women have period pains so severe that they affect their everyday life. This could be due to many reasons, and it could also indicate serious issues like polycystic ovaries or endometriosis. A study in 2012, reported that 32-40% of women and girls have had period pain so painful that has resulted in missing work or school. However, even when experiencing severe pain, many women have gone into work due to the stigma associated with calling in sick.  (NCBI)
  2. It is important to differentiate between PMS, which is something which over 80% of women of childbearing age experience, and PMDD, or postmenstrual dysphoric disorder. This is a hormonal issue in which conditions are similar to PMS but much more severe, with the individual often experiencing severe depression or anxiety in the week before their period begins. It is estimated that approximately 5% of women have PMDD, but such statistics fail to acknowledge many women live with the disorder but just assume that it is PMS. (Women’s Health)
  3. Question: How can we normalize talking about periods?
