Authenticity is what we all strive for. When we look at other people, we base our respect on how “phony” we believe them to be. Authenticity is all about being true to oneself but it is not the easiest thing to present to the world. It requires a mixture of self-awareness and vulnerability. We all need to allow others room for errors, growth, and empathy before we will all feel comfortable showing our authentic selves without judgement.

Sometimes the source of that inauthenticity is buried so deep that it can be difficult for an individual to recognize even in themselves. Being judgemental of others, having a hostile sense of humor and being unable to express emotions freely and clearly are all signs that a person is not being authentic. (Psychology Today)
The “Authenticity Paradox” is discussed in the Harvard Business Review as a danger of being completely authentic. While it is an admirable quality, it can have negative effects in business or your personal life. Being authentic to who you are now might be trumped by allowing yourself to grow or learn within any given situation. (HBR)
