The body positivity movement has been hugely influential in shifting away from the societal standards of beauty. However, some people have found this to be inaccessible and not quite reflective of their voice. Amongst claims that body-positive spaces can be more exclusive than inclusive, there has been a recent shift towards the concept of body neutrality.
This movement asks people to find acceptance in the body, seeing it for all that it provides, and move on to focusing on other pursuits and achievements. We are so much more than just our exteriors.

In the media, we often see a very specific body type which is portrayed as being desirable, but realistically only 5% of American women possess this ‘ideal’ type. Whereas, 91% of women across the United States experience high body dissatisfaction and have been on some form of diet within their lifetime. (Journal of Eating Disorders)
Focusing too heavily on the things you don’t like about your appearance can have a negative effect on more than just your body image. It can affect your eating habits, can cause psychological distress and can lower your quality of life. On the flipside, having gratitude for things you like can improve your mental strength, empathy and your physical health. (Mental Health Foundation)
