Life isn’t always a fairy tale. And although we all like to hear about happy endings, it’s important to remind ourselves that the world isn’t always full of good people with good intentions.
This design, created by artist Spiffy Dame, is a reminder that human trafficking is a story that needs to be told. Like in the story of Cinderella, some teens who are down-and-out may find someone who they perceive to be a fairy godmother. However, unlike the fairy tale version, that godmother doesn’t always have the best of intentions. Many people in the world look to take advantage of at-risk teens, eventually forcing them into the world of sex trafficking. Take a closer look at this design, and you’ll see how the young girl is being forced into a life of modern-day slavery.

There are many risk factors that might make a teen more vulnerable to being lured by traffickers. They tend to prey on those that do not have a stable family life, either due to homelessness, violence or addiction. Those that tend to isolate themselves, that suffer from learning difficulties that affect their school performance and those that suffer from mental illness are also vulnerable. (Safe Supportive Learning)
Those who have been in the foster care or welfare systems are also at an increased risk of being trafficked. Moreover, children of color are also frequently targeted, with the FBI reporting that 52% of all juvenile arrests for sex work are African-American children. (UCR)
Question: How can we better speak to our children about the dangers of trafficking?
