While it might seem out of the realm of possibility for some, there are many reasons why young people choose to join a gang. It can mean companionship, a sense of family, and protection that they haven’t experienced elsewhere in their lives. But it also does include entering a world of risk, abuse and criminal activity.
Gangs may be organized based on a number of factors, including ethnicity, race, or geographic location. It is thought that there are around 33,000 gangs in the USA, which is a 15 percent rise since 2006, and it is estimated that half of all violent crimes in London, England are committed by a gang member.
