Gender is a fluid social construct that has little to do with the anatomy of a given person. Boys can be feminine, girls can be masculine, or any other combination along various spectrums. If a boy wants to paint his nails, or wear makeup, or play with dolls, or exhibit any number of other typically “feminine” traits, he should not be made to feel ashamed. Let boys be as feminine as they want to be.

The common saying, “Let boys be boys” has proven time and again to continue toxically masculine behavior. Not only does it take responsibility off of men and boys who act violently or hurtfully, but it also implies that boys are meant to be rough and violent. It also seems to indicate that this is the only way that you can be a “true boy”, when really each child and man will have their own balance of traits, different from those around them. One of the barriers that keeps men from embracing their feminine sides is deep seated homophobia that still exists throughout the world. There even exists a prejudice against men who present too feminine within the LGBTQIA+ community. This is all due to the mistaken belief that by presenting as more feminine, that makes you “less of a man”. This belief is not only completely false but also toxic for people trying to present their most authentic selves. (The Body Is Not an Apology)
