Since the Me Too Movement, we are starting to see that the failure of many to have a clear understanding of consent plays a large role in rape culture. Ultimately, sexual consent is when a person agrees to have sexual contact by choice, and they must have the freedom and capacity to be able to make that decision without believing there will be any consequences.
With statistics regarding sexual assaults remaining unchanged in 17 years, it is imperative that we teach our young people the importance of consent and what this means in healthy adult relationships. This Only Yes Means Yes design aims to spread the word.

There is a common myth that sexual violence coincides with physical violence, and a lack of this has even been used to question witness credibility in the courtroom. However, this is not the case and a lack of physical injury does not in any way indicate whether a person experienced sexual violence. Perpetrators may use coercion or threat, the person may go limp rather than react, or there could be another reason why they were unable to consent, such as being underage. (Psychology Today)
A common defense against an allegation of sexual assault is that the victim is lying. But studies indicate that only around 5% of cases are later revealed to be false, which would suggest that 95% are telling the truth. Debates surrounding false claims are relevant, but ultimately, we need to ensure that people who have experienced rape or sexual assault can come forward and report the crime. (NCTSN)
