Homeless people are no different from you and I; their circumstances are. There are many stigmas and misunderstandings around the homeless community. Some believe that the only representation of homeless people are those with addictions or mental illness or have made “poor choices” to end up on the streets. The truth is that there are those with families and full-time jobs that experience homelessness. There are those who make the choice to live without a permanent residence and those that are escaping dangers and abuse experienced elsewhere. The bottom line is that anyone experiencing homelessness deserves help, compassion and respect - as they are just as worthy of love and support as anyone.

One in four homeless people in North America are children and there are lots of ways that you can help them to have a better life beyond donating to shelters or food banks. Organizations like Covenant House, Big Brothers and Sisters and the YMCA offer programs geared at at-risk and homeless youth.
In Canada, roughly 44% of Violence Against Women shelters are full on a given day. (Homeless Hub)
